A truly unique item was put up for auction in June at London's Noonans Mayfair: a 16th- century signet ring with an extraordinary history, symbolism and craftsmanship.
This unique ring bears the coat of arms of the Warner family —the ring's owner—and the enameled grasshopper , the sigil of Sir Thomas Gresham. Gresham was not only one of the most powerful financiers of his era, but also an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I and the founder of the Royal London Stock Exchange.
Photo: Sir Thomas Gresham was financial agent to four Tudor monarchs: Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth I.
Only a few of Gresham's business partners and advisors received signet rings with his symbol – the grasshopper.
The heart of the ring is an intaglio – a precisely engraved motif hidden beneath a transparent crystal cabochon. The symbol is only visible at certain light angles, further enhancing the aura of mystery and exclusivity.
Although estimated at £10,000–15,000, it ultimately sold for an impressive £42,000 . Only 10 of these rings are known in the world – each a relic from the Tudor era, combining aristocratic heritage, loyalty, and prestige.
